Formal Interventions

Hanbleceya is one of the few institutions that offer remote psychiatric interventions.  Similar to standard chemical dependency interventions, psychiatric interventions are designed to interrupt the cycle of psychiatric symptomology and create an avenue for the mentally ill loved one to get help.

Hanbleceya's professional intervention services are most often used by "in-crisis" families and individuals who are no longer able or willing to support their mentally ill loved one if he or she is not getting adequate and appropriate therapeutic help.  The clinical purpose for performing an intervention is simple:  To get the loved-one into a safe and contained environment where he/she can be sufficiently stabilized over an appropriate period of time then transition to the next indicated level of treatment.

Directly after an intervention, the loved one is most often admitted to a psychiatric hospital for acute stabilization.  Hanbleceya's post-intervention hospitalization policy requires that the client stay in the hospital until the necessary stabilization is achieved so that the client is ready to make a transition to the next level of treatment.   Often, psychiatric hospital stays are controlled by insurance companies whose definition of stability may not fit with our clinical assessment as to whether stability has been achieved.  Sadly, this often means that insurance companies seek to have the client discharged before they are clinically ready to move into an outpatient setting.  To avoid this unfortunate situation, we have established close, professional relationships with two local psychiatric hospitals which allow us to provide reasonable assurances to our clients that they will be properly cared for at a time in their life when suitable containment is vital and not discharged before they are ready.

When a family contracts with Hanbleceya to provide intervention services, an intervention team will be assigned and the following services will be provided:

Assessment – The intervention team will gather information about your loved one including the history of diagnoses, treatment and substance abuse, problematic behaviors, strengths, and the family and support system. The information is thoroughly reviewed and analyzed prior to the team formulating and making a recommendation for the best intervention approach.  Additionally, at this time the team will provide a recommendation as to the best facility for treatment and begin coordinating an admission plan with the chosen facility. Cost of treatment and potential insurance coverage will also be discussed and confirmed with the treating facility.

Education – The family will be educated on the illness, its impact on the family system and the importance of containment. An intervention is not the last effort but rather one of the first steps on the road to recovery. It launches a journey toward recovery even if the loved one refuses to enter a treatment facility at that time. Through the intervention process, the dynamics of the family system have been changed and if the family remains strong, recovery often follows.  Maintaining the limits set in the intervention can be difficult, but it changes lives and provides the opportunity for your loved one and the rest of the family system to heal. Our team of professionals will educate you and your family on how to successfully get your loved one to voluntarily enter treatment even when he or she initially says “no.”

The Intervention – The intervention process is comprised of seven main components:

  • Team Selection – Significant family and friends are chosen to be part of the intervention process and team.
  • Script Writing and Review – Each team member writes a script, which will be reviewed by the interventionist.
  • Establishing Boundaries – Each member establishes a clear, firm and realistic boundary that they are prepared to set with their loved one.
  • Plan of Action – Logistics, coordination and communication are discussed, including where, when and how the intervention will take place.
  • Rehearsal – The interventionist will review the scripts and role-play the delivery of the scripts.  The intervention process is then reviewed once more and plans are confirmed to carry out the intervention.  Potential outcomes are also discussed here such as what happens if the loved one agrees to enter treatment, what happens if he or she says no, how to handle attempts to bargain and negotiate, and so on.
  • Formal Intervention – Your loved one will be involved in one of the most loving, heartfelt and potentially life altering processes of his/her life.  But ultimately it will be his/her decision whether or not to accept treatment at that time.  Everyone in the family system must be prepared for and ready to accept either outcome.
  • Transportation - The intervention team will safely transport loved-one to the chosen treatment facility.

Treatment Facility Admission Coordination – A stabilization period at an acute care facility is necessary following an intervention. The intervention team will coordinate and participate in the admission/intake process with the facility through admission and will provide a confirmation report to family.  If the family intends to pursue an admission to Hanbleceya Treatment Center following psychiatric stabilization, then coordination with Hanbleceya will begin at this time. Preliminary assessments will take place at a point in time when the treating facility and Hanbleceya clinical staff have determined that your loved one has stabilized and is ready to transition to the next phase of treatment.
